For This Financial Group, Sustainability Is a Must-Have Strategy | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it
Equilibrium Capital invests in green businesses to bring in greenbacks.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Sustainability, in its deeper sense, not environmental management will be the core consideration for successful future corporate growth.  It will require tough discipline that must address the more difficult natural capital and social justice challenges.

Climate change to drastically alter face of Bengal Bay

Climate change to drastically alter face of Bengal Bay | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it
The Bay of Bengal region will undergo a dire and drastic transformation unless urgent action is taken to deal with the disastrous effects of global warming, climate change experts have warned.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Just how many warnings about the impending global disasters that will be the consequence of global climate change do politicians need before they will act?

"The objective of the workshop is to create awareness and shape public opinion regarding the calamitous impact of global warming and climate change, and to enhance community resilience for sustainable development. Apart from Parasuraman, the event was attended by Ambika Prasad Nanda (United Nations Development Programme), Aniruddha Dey (executive director, PRISM), Ardhendu Chatterjee (DRCSC, Kolkata), Sanjay Vasisht (director, CANSA) and Kunal Shah from World Vision India. "

Proxy Preview 2015 Examines Record-Breaking Number of Sustainability-Related Shareholder Resolutions | Sustainable Brands

Proxy Preview 2015 Examines Record-Breaking Number of Sustainability-Related Shareholder Resolutions | Sustainable Brands | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it
This month, shareholder advocacy organization As You Sow released its 10th annual Proxy Preview report, detailing the record-breaking 433 social and environmental shareholder resolutions filed so far this proxy season, with political spending and climate change driving most of the activity.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

It may be a new record but the number of shareholder resolutions on sustainability related issues is remakbly low.  Shareholders with a vested interest in business is usual moving to better business as usual are clearly not the key group in a paradigm shift.  Corporate mind sets need a hard reality check; current consumption patterns guarantee. Global impoverishment.  Shareholders are not the group that is seeking to achieve a system shift.

The problem with sustainability marketing? Not enough me, me, me

The problem with sustainability marketing? Not enough me, me, me | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it
Campaigns often appeal to our better intentions and higher purpose but perhaps they need to focus on answering the question ‘what’s in it for me?’
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Consumer driven sustainability is critical to future progress in reducing planetary impacts. Regulation and commodity resource constraints can only drive manufacturers and suppliers part way to leaner more efficient processes Until consumers spend more selectively on the Planetary Credit Card it will continue to plunge into irretrievable debt.  Paradigm Shift is clearly not yet a catchy brand name for a sustainable society.

Google Earth: how much has global warming raised temperatures near you? | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it

If you've ever wondered how much global warming has raised local temperatures in your area or elsewhere on the globe, the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (UEA CRU) has just released a newinteractive Google Earth layer that will let you answer this question with ease. UEA CRU is one of the scientific organizations that compile temperature data from around the world. Their temperature dataset over land is called CRUTEM4, and is one of the most widely used records of the climate system.

The new Google Earth format allows users to scroll around the world, zoom in on 6,000 weather stations, and view monthly, seasonal and annual temperature data more easily than ever before. Users can drill down to see some 20,000 graphs – some of which show temperature records dating back to 1850.

A little-known yeast historically used in South Africa’s wine industry could revolutionise the food and cosmetics industries, and help halt deforestation
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Orangutans everywhere will be chortling over their copy of Guardian Sustainable Business.  A viable and economic Palm Oil substitute is the philosophers stone for this endangered hominid which is genetically so close to us yet so far away through our low valuation of natural capital compared to high revenue profits.

Biscuit lovers may once again be able to dunk happily in the knowledge that no Orangutans were made homeless in pursuit of their cheap crunch.

DEFRA MINISTER George Eustice has told Scottish farmers he is fighting for the dairy sector by asking the taxman to be lenient with those suffering cash flow problems.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

So will government ministers fight for HMRC leniency for all micro-businesses that are suffering from aggressive competition, supermarket domination of the market place, squeezed margins and late payment of bills by customers?  My walk through Bath revealed nine empty shops where the previous tenants could probably have claimed the same extenuating circumstances.  Sellers beware!

How businesses can engage consumers in their sustainability stories | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it
Consumers are facing information overload. Tapping into people’s values and sharing positive messages will help connect over sustainability
Gordon McGlone's insight:

The marketing industry is well behind the sustainability curve.  It's not about greenwash it's about immersing consumers in honest open dialogue; moving to sustainability will be tough and difficult.  Getting consumers to believe in corporate progress is one of the keys to making sustainability pay.

The Cost of Sprawl: A Visual Comparison

The Cost of Sprawl: A Visual Comparison | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it

The cost of sprawl is 2.5 times more expensive than the compact city.

Sidewalks, water and wastewater pipes, schools and libraries, police and fire protection, and of course, roads. And whether the costs are paid by the homeowner, the local government, or businesses, the lower density in the suburbs leads to higher costs to operate, maintain and replace all these services...

L'étalement urbain, une de nos spécialités en Poitou-Charentes a un surcoût concernant les services et bien sûr environnemental.

Bonne illustration de cela

Bella The Non-Vampire's curator insight, March 10, 10:12 AM

Sprawl is the spread of development over the landscape. For suburban areas it's going to be more expensive than urban areas. Sprawl in suburban areas would overall take more time in making it more as an urban area. Making urban areas more industrial is going to be a lot easier especially since the area has already been industrialized.

China vows 'harsh punishment' for toxic smog culprits | Sustaining Values | Scoop.it

BEIJING, Feb 26 (Reuters) - China's environment ministry has vowed to 'harshly punish' factories and power plants that contributed to a hazardous smog which enveloped much of Northern China, official state media reported on Wednesday.

Investigations had found that some thermal power plants, cement and steel makers in the northern province of Hebei had failed to halt or curtail production during severely smoggy days despite government orders, state news agency Xinhua quoted the Ministry of Environmental Protection as saying.
